Big Ten Orange Bowl Agreement

The goals for the above criteria ultimately boil down to the ability to have competitive shells to produce the most attractive games and diversify Bowl match-ups and teams that move to new locations for both teams and their fans. Shells that are not part of the CFP have contractual links with certain conferences. For the 2019/20 Bowl season, all Bowls have at least two tie-ins, which means there are no large open seats in these trays, provided all conferences produce enough bowl-capable teams. Many Bowls also have contingency contracts to offer tickets to other specific conferences if their first choice is not eligible. If a slot cannot be occupied at all by a contract conference, the spot opens and the bowl can offer the slot to any legitimate team. In the 1990s, the Orange Bowl was a member of the Coalition Bowl, but retained its Big Eight. She later was a member of the Alliance Bowl. From 1998 to 2013, The Orange Bowl was a member of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The Orange Bowl was organized in 2001 and 2005 as a bcs National Championship Game. However, starting in the 2006 season, the BCS National Championship Game became a full-fledged event organized by the local Bowl organization about a week after the New Year`s Bowl (including the Orange Bowl). In this format, the Orange Bowl Committee hosted two separate games in 2009 (the Orange Bowl 2009 on January 1 and the BCS National Championship Game 2009 on January 8) and 2013 (the 2013 Orange Bowl on January 1 and the 2013 BCS National Championship Game on January 7).

The BCS ended after the 2013 season and was replaced by the current college football playoff (CFP). The Orange Bowl has been one of six BOWL bowls in the PSC since the 2014 season. During the years when it is not a national semifinal, the Orange Bowl is organized by the CHAMPION of the ACC, if this team is not among the top four seeds for the PCP. A national semifinal was held at the Orange Bowl after the 2015 and 2018 seasons. A committee may select one team because of its geographic proximity, the ability to travel for the fan community or other factors for another.
